Zamek Devin
It is one of the most important cultural monuments in Slovakia. Devín Castle is still the site of some of the most interesting archaeological discoveries in Great Moravia. In Devín, traces of Celts, Romans, Slavs, and medieval builders can still be seen, who took advantage of the geological composition of Devín's rocks to renovate the castle in an original way.
Explorers wanted to find Dovina in this area, the seat of Prince Rostislav, where he welcomed Constantine and Methodius (the so-called apostles of the Slavs). However, archaeologists found remains from different eras there – which tourists can still see today.
Devín was a crossroads of different religions and cultures. The Romans settled there. To this day, Austrian researchers are searching for the capital of the former kingdom of Noricum there. In the 20th century, it stood on the border between the Western and Eastern blocs.
Visitors are also captivated by the local nature. Devin Castle is home to rare butterflies (blue tits and swallowtails) and birds (the wall creeper), as well as rare carnations and common mugwort (the last such natural habitat in Slovakia).
Devín Castle is closed from November to March, and during the remaining months, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with varying hours depending on the season. Various events and exhibitions are held there.
